How to install OPNsense on Clear Linux Latest

OPNsense is a free and open-source firewall and routing platform that is based on FreeBSD. The latest version of Clear Linux is also based on the same operating system, which makes it possible to install and run OPNsense on Clear Linux. In this tutorial, we'll take you through the steps you need to follow to install OPNsense on Clear Linux latest version.

Step 1: Download the OPNsense Image

The first step is to download the latest OPNsense image from the official OPNsense website. Go to https://opnsense.org/download/ and select the "MIRROR" link that corresponds to your location. Next, choose the version of OPNsense that you want to download, and then click on the "Download" button.

Step 2: Create a Virtual Machine

Once the OPNsense image has been downloaded, the next step is to create a virtual machine where we can install it. You can use any virtualization software of your choice, such as VirtualBox or KVM. In this tutorial, we're going to use VirtualBox as an example.

Launch VirtualBox and click on the "New" button to create a new virtual machine. Give your virtual machine a name, choose "BSD" as the type, and select "FreeBSD (64-bit)" as the version. Then click on "Next".

In the memory size field, allocate at least 2GB of RAM for the virtual machine, and then click on "Next". In the Hard disk field, select "Create a virtual hard disk now", and click on "Create".

On the next screen, choose "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)" as the type of hard disk and click on "Next". In the storage on physical hard disk field, select "Dynamically allocated", and then click on "Next".

In the file location and size field, choose a location on your hard drive where you want to store the virtual hard disk, allocate at least 20GB of storage space, and then click on "Create".

Step 3: Configure the Virtual Machine

After creating the virtual machine, we'll need to configure it before we can install OPNsense.

First, select the virtual machine that you just created and click on the "Settings" button. In the "System" section, make sure that the "Enable EFI (special OSes only)" option is unchecked, and the "Enable I/O APIC" option is checked.

In the "Storage" section, click on the "Empty" optical drive and then click on the "Choose Virtual Optical Disk File" button. Browse to where you saved the OPNsense image and select it.

In the "Network" section, select "Bridged Adapter" under the Attached to field. This will allow the virtual machine to be connected to the network.

Once you've finished configuring the virtual machine, click on the "OK" button to save the changes.

Step 4: Install OPNsense

Next, we'll boot up the virtual machine and install OPNsense.

Select the virtual machine you just configured, and click on the "Start" button. The virtual machine will boot up and will automatically start the installation process.

At the installation menu, select "Install", and follow the on-screen instructions to install OPNsense.

Step 5: Access the OPNsense Web Interface

Once the installation is complete, OPNsense will prompt you to set up the web interface.

Open a web browser on your host machine, and go to the IP address that was assigned to the OPNsense virtual machine during the installation process, for example, "https://192.168.0.2".

You'll be prompted to enter a username and password. The default username is "root", and the default password is "opnsense".

Once you've logged in, you'll have access to the OPNsense web interface, where you can configure and manage the firewall and routing settings.

Congratulations! You've successfully installed OPNsense on Clear Linux Latest.
