It is easy to use and has many features that make it a great choice for those who need to type in Simplified Chinese.

Prerequisites

Before we get started, there are a few things that you will need to have in order to install Pastila:

Now that we have everything we need, let's get started!

Step 1: Install Dependencies

First, we need to install the dependencies required for Pastila. Open up a terminal window and type the following command:

sudo apt install librime-data-pinyin librime-data-wubi librime-data-stroke librime-data-bopomofo librime-data-cangjie5 librime-data-quick5 librime-data-array30 librime-data-jyutping librime-data-ipa librime-data-wugniu

This command will install all the dependencies that are required for Pastila to work properly.

Step 2: Download and Install Pastila

Next, we need to download and install Pastila. Go to the official Pastila website at https://pastila.nl/download and click on the "Linux" button to download the latest version of Pastila.

Once the download is complete, open up a terminal window and navigate to the directory where the Pastila installation file is located. For example, if the file is located in the "Downloads" folder, type the following command:

cd ~/Downloads

Now that we are in the correct directory, we can install Pastila by typing the following command:

sudo dpkg -i pastila_1.1.0_amd64.deb

This command will install Pastila on your system.

Step 3: Configure Pastila

Now that Pastila is installed on your system, we need to configure it. Open up a terminal window and type the following command:

sudo gedit /usr/share/rime-data/pastila.custom.yaml

This command will open up the Pastila configuration file. Scroll down to the "schema_list" section and uncomment the Simplified Chinese schema by removing the "#" symbol from the beginning of the line.

Save and close the file.

Step 4: Restart IBus

Finally, we need to restart IBus to make sure that Pastila is enabled. Open up a terminal window and type the following command:

ibus restart
