Umbraco is a popular content management system that is used to build dynamic websites and applications. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Umbraco on Elementary OS, which is a popular Linux distribution.
Before we begin, there are a few things that you will need to have in place:
If you do not have any of these components installed, you will need to install them first before proceeding with the tutorial.
The first step is to download the latest version of Umbraco from the official website. You can do this by visiting the following link:
Once you have downloaded the file, extract it to a directory on your web server. In this tutorial, we will be installing Umbraco in the /var/www/umbraco directory.
Next, you will need to create a database and user for Umbraco to use. You can do this using the following commands:
mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE umbraco;
CREATE USER 'umbraco'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON umbraco.* TO 'umbraco'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Replace "password" with a password of your choice.
Now that you have the Umbraco files and a database set up, it's time to install the dependencies. We will be using Composer to do this.
Navigate to the directory where you extracted the Umbraco files, and run the following command:
composer install
This will install all the dependencies required for Umbraco to run.
Now that you have the Umbraco dependencies installed, it's time to configure the installation. Make a copy of the /var/www/umbraco/umbraco/includes/example_connstring.config file and rename it to connstring.config. Open the file in a text editor, and update the following values to match the database and user you created earlier:
<add key="umbracoDbDSN" value="Server=localhost;Database=umbraco;User ID=umbraco;Password=password;"/>
Replace "password" with the password you chose earlier.
Save the file, and then create a new file called /var/www/umbraco/umbraco/includes/umbracoSettings.config. Copy the contents of the /var/www/umbraco/umbraco/includes/example.umbracoSettings.config file into this new file, and save it.
Finally, you need to set the correct folder permissions for Umbraco to work. Run the following commands:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/umbraco
sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/umbraco
You're almost done! In your web browser, navigate to http://your-server-ip/umbraco. You should see the Umbraco installation page. Follow the instructions to finish the installation, and you're all set!
In this tutorial, we showed you how to install Umbraco on Elementary OS. By following these steps, you can have a fully functional content management system up and running in no time.
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
