DreamFactory is an open-source API management platform that facilitates the creation of enterprise-ready, secure, and scalable REST APIs without writing any code. In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to install DreamFactory on Kali Linux Latest.
Before installing any new software, it’s always recommended to update the system packages to their latest version using the following command:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
DreamFactory requires a web server with PHP support to function correctly. We will be installing the Apache web server and PHP packages using the following command:
sudo apt install apache2 php php-curl php-mysql php-zip php-ldap php-mbstring php-xml php-bcmath
Once installed, restart Apache using the following command:
sudo systemctl restart apache2
Now we are ready to download and install DreamFactory. We will be downloading the latest stable release from the official website using the following command:
wget -O dreamfactory.zip https://github.com/dreamfactorysoftware/dreamfactory/releases/latest/download/dreamfactory.zip
Once downloaded, extract the downloaded .zip file to the Apache web server document root using the following commands:
sudo unzip dreamfactory.zip -d /var/www/html/
sudo mv /var/www/html/dreamfactory-* /var/www/html/dreamfactory
We will now change the ownership of the DreamFactory files and give write permissions to the cache and log directories using the following commands:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/dreamfactory
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www/html/dreamfactory/storage
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www/html/dreamfactory/bootstrap/cache
DreamFactory uses a MySQL database to store its data. We will be creating a new database, user, and password for DreamFactory using the following commands:
sudo mysql -u root -p
Enter the root password.
CREATE DATABASE dreamfactory;
CREATE USER dreamfactoryuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON dreamfactory.* TO dreamfactoryuser@localhost;
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Remember to replace 'password' with the actual password you want to use.
Now we will configure DreamFactory to connect to the MySQL database we just created. Open the .env file located in the DreamFactory installation directory using the following command:
sudo nano /var/www/html/dreamfactory/.env
Update the following lines with your MySQL database information:
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_DATABASE=dreamfactory
DB_USERNAME=dreamfactoryuser
DB_PASSWORD=password
Again, remember to replace 'password' with the actual password you created in Step 4.
Finally, we will need to restart Apache once again to load the new configuration files using the following command:
sudo systemctl restart apache2
You may now navigate to the DreamFactory web console by going to http://localhost/dreamfactory
. Login using the default credentials:
Email: dreamfactory@admin.com
Password: dreamfactory
Congratulations! You have successfully installed DreamFactory on Kali Linux Latest. You may now begin creating and managing APIs with ease. Happy coding!
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
