How to Install Healthchecks on Kali Linux Latest?

Healthchecks is a self-hosted system for monitoring cron jobs, scheduled tasks, and services. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Healthchecks on Kali Linux Latest using the command line.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the installation, you need to make sure that your Kali Linux system meets the following requirements:

Step 1: Update the System

We recommend updating the Kali Linux system and all its packages to the latest version before installing Healthchecks.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Step 2: Install PostgreSQL

Healthchecks requires a PostgreSQL database to save its data. Run the following command to install PostgreSQL.

sudo apt-get install postgresql postgresql-contrib -y

After installing PostgreSQL, start the PostgreSQL service and enable it on the system boot.

sudo systemctl start postgresql
sudo systemctl enable postgresql

Step 3: Install Git

Git is required to clone the Healthchecks repository from the Github. Run the following command to install Git.

sudo apt-get install git -y

Step 4: Clone the Healthchecks Repository

Clone the Healthchecks repository into the /opt/healthchecks directory using Git.

sudo git clone https://github.com/healthchecks/healthchecks.git /opt/healthchecks

Step 5: Install Required Packages

To install Healthchecks dependencies, run the following command.

cd /opt/healthchecks/
sudo apt-get install python3-pip python3-dev libpq-dev libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev libffi-dev build-essential -y
sudo pip3 install -r requirements.txt

Step 6: Create PostgreSQL Database and User

Create a new PostgreSQL user and a database named healthchecks_db. Replace somepassword with a secure password for the PostgreSQL user.

sudo su - postgres
psql -c "CREATE DATABASE healthchecks_db;"
psql -c "CREATE USER healthchecks_user WITH PASSWORD 'somepassword';"
psql -c "GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON DATABASE healthchecks_db TO healthchecks_user;"
exit

Step 7: Configure Healthchecks

Copy the local_settings.py.example to local_settings.py and edit it.

mv local_settings.py.example local_settings.py
nano local_settings.py

Edit the following settings in local_settings.py:

DEBUG = False
SITE_ROOT = "http://IP_ADDRESS"
ALLOWED_HOSTS = ["*"]
DATABASES = {
    "default": {
        "ENGINE": "django.db.backends.postgresql",
        "NAME": "healthchecks_db",
        "USER": "healthchecks_user",
        "PASSWORD": "somepassword",
        "HOST": "localhost",
        "PORT": "",
    }
}

Replace IP_ADDRESS with your server's IP address.

Step 8: Initialize the Database and Superuser Account

Run the following command to initialize the database and create a new superuser account.

cd /opt/healthchecks/
sudo python3 manage.py migrate
sudo python3 manage.py createsuperuser

Step 9: Start Healthchecks

Start the Healthchecks service and enable it on the system boot.

sudo systemctl start healthchecks
sudo systemctl enable healthchecks

Step 10: Testing Healthchecks

Open a web browser and navigate to http://IP_ADDRESS. You should see the Healthchecks login page. Use the superuser account that you created in Step 8 to log in.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed and configured Healthchecks on Kali Linux Latest. You can now use it to monitor cron jobs, scheduled tasks, and services.

If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
