In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of installing phpBB, a popular open-source forum software, on Kali Linux.
Step 1: Update and upgrade your system packages
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Step 2: Install Apache, MySQL, and PHP
sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php php-mysql php-gd
Step 3: Create a new database
sudo mysql -u root -p
Enter your MySQL root password and execute the following command to create a new database named phpbb3
:
CREATE DATABASE phpbb3;
Step 4: Download phpBB
wget https://www.phpbb.com/files/release/phpBB-3.x.x.zip
Replace x.x
with the version number that you want to install.
Step 5: Extract the downloaded file and move it to the Apache document root
unzip phpBB-3.x.x.zip
sudo mv phpBB3 /var/www/html/
Step 6: Assign proper permissions
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/phpBB3/
sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/phpBB3/
Step 7: Restart Apache
sudo systemctl restart apache2
Step 8: Start the installation process
Open a web browser and navigate to http://localhost/phpBB3/install/app.php
to start the installation process.
Follow the steps in the installation wizard and provide the database details when prompted.
Step 9: Delete the installation directory Once the installation is complete, delete the installation directory for security purposes.
sudo rm -r /var/www/html/phpBB3/install/
You have successfully installed phpBB on Kali Linux. You can now customize your forum and start creating posts.
