Packer is a tool for creating identical machine images for multiple platforms such as virtual machines, Docker containers, and AWS EC2 instances. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Packer on OpenBSD.
Before starting with the installation, you need to have the following requirements:
Before you begin, it is important to update the system with the latest available patches and packages.
You can start by updating the package manager using the below command:
$ sudo pkg_add -Uu
Next, you need to install dependencies required to run Packer on OpenBSD:
$ sudo pkg_add unzip wget
After updating the system and installing the required packages, you can proceed with downloading the latest stable version of Packer from the official website:
$ wget https://releases.hashicorp.com/packer/1.5.6/packer_1.5.6_openbsd_amd64.zip
Once you've downloaded the Packer binary file, you will need to extract it. The following command will extract the archive file:
$ unzip packer_1.5.6_openbsd_amd64.zip -d /usr/local/bin/
Note: If you encounter any permission denied errors while running the above command, try running it with root privileges.
Confirm if Packer is working properly by checking the version:
$ packer version
If everything worked correctly, you should see the version of Packer that you installed:
Packer v1.5.6
Congratulations! You have successfully installed Packer on OpenBSD. You can now use Packer to create machine images for your desired platforms.
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
