How to Install MediaCMS on OpenSUSE Latest

MediaCMS is a free and open-source content management system designed for managing and publishing audio and video content. In this tutorial, we'll go through the steps of installing MediaCMS on OpenSUSE Latest.

Prerequisites

Before we proceed, ensure that you have met the following requirements:

Step 1: Update Your System

First, ensure that your system is up-to-date by running the following command:

sudo zypper update

This will update your system packages to the latest versions available.

Step 2: Install Required Packages

Next, install the necessary packages needed to build and run MediaCMS:

sudo zypper install apache2 apache2-mod_php7 php7 php7-mbstring php7-mysqlnd mysql-community-server

Step 3: Download MediaCMS

To download the latest version of MediaCMS, run the following command:

sudo wget https://github.com/mediacms-io/mediacms/releases/download/v2.5.1/mediacms-v2.5.1.zip

Step 4: Unzip the Downloaded File

After the download is complete, extract the downloaded archive to the desired directory by running:

sudo unzip mediacms-v2.5.1.zip -d /var/www/html/

This command extracts the file into the default web root folder on OpenSUSE, which is /var/www/html/.

Step 5: Create a Database

Now, log in to your MySQL server using the following command:

sudo mysql -u root -p

Create a new database and user for MediaCMS using the following SQL commands:

CREATE DATABASE mediacms;
CREATE USER 'mediacmsuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mediacms.* TO 'mediacmsuser'@'localhost';

Replace mypassword with a strong password for your user.

Step 6: Configure MediaCMS

We need to configure MediaCMS to connect to our newly created database. To do this, navigate to the MediaCMS installation directory and open the config.php file with your favorite text editor:

sudo nano /var/www/html/mediacms/config.php

Update the database credentials with the following information:

define('DB_USER', 'mediacmsuser');
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'mypassword');
define('DB_NAME', 'mediacms');
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

Save and close the file.

Step 7: Set File Permissions

Next, we need to set the correct permissions for MediaCMS to work correctly. Run the following commands to set the correct permissions:

sudo chown -R wwwrun:www /var/www/html/mediacms/
sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/mediacms/

Step 8: Configure Apache2

Create a new Apache2 virtual host configuration file:

sudo nano /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/mediacms.conf

Add the following virtual host configuration:

<VirtualHost *:80>
        ServerName mediacms.local
        ServerAlias www.mediacms.local
        DocumentRoot /var/www/html/mediacms/

        ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/mediacms.error.log
        CustomLog /var/log/apache2/mediacms.access.log combined

        <Directory /var/www/html/mediacms/>
        Options FollowSymLinks
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
        </Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Save and close the file.

Step 9: Restart Apache2

Now that we have configured Apache2, we need to restart it for the changes to take effect:

sudo systemctl restart apache2

Step 10: Access MediaCMS

Open your web browser and navigate to the URL http://your_server_ip/mediacms, and you should see the MediaCMS installation screen. Follow the on-screen installation instructions, and you'll be up and running in no time!

That's it! You have successfully installed MediaCMS on OpenSUSE Latest. You can now use MediaCMS to manage and publish your audio and video content.

If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!

Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
