How to Install OSSN on OpenSUSE Latest

OSSN (Open Source Social Network) is a free and open-source social networking software that can be used to create your social network website. In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to install OSSN on OpenSUSE Latest.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you should have the following:

• OpenSUSE Latest installed
• Access to the root user or a user with sudo privileges
• Basic knowledge in Linux command-line

Step 1: Update your System

Before installing any software, it is essential to update your system. You can do this by running the following commands:

sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper update

Step 2: Install Apache, MariaDB, and PHP

OSSN requires a webserver, database, and PHP to run. In this step, we will install Apache, MariaDB, and PHP by running the following command:

sudo zypper install -y apache2 apache2-mod_php7 mariadb mariadb-client mariadb-tools php7 php7-mysql php7-gd php7-mbstring php7-json

Step 3: Download OSSN

Next, you need to download the latest version of OSSN from their official website. You can run the following command:

wget https://www.opensource-socialnetwork.org/download/ossn-v6.2.zip

Step 4: Create a New Directory

We will extract the downloaded file to the web server root directory. To create a new directory for your OSSN, run the following command:

sudo mkdir /var/www/ossn

Step 5: Extract the Downloaded File

Extract the downloaded file and move it to the newly created directory by running the following command:

sudo unzip ossn-v6.2.zip -d /var/www/ossn/

Step 6: Set Permissions

To allow your webserver to access the files, set the following permissions by running the following commands:

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/ossn/
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www/ossn/

Step 7: Create a Database and User

In this step, we’ll create a new database and user for OSSN. Run the following commands to log in to MariaDB as a root user:

sudo mysql -u root -p

Once you are logged in, create the database and user with the following commands:

CREATE DATABASE ossn_db CHARACTER SET utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_unicode_ci;
GRANT ALL ON ossn_db.* TO 'ossn_user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'PASSWORD';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
EXIT;

Note: Replace PASSWORD with your desired password.

Step 8: Configure Apache

Create a new virtual host configuration file for Apache by running the following command:

sudo nano /etc/apache2/conf.d/ossn.conf

Add the following lines in the file:

   DocumentRoot /var/www/ossn/
   DirectoryIndex index.php
   <Directory /var/www/ossn/>
        Options FollowSymLinks
        AllowOverride All
        Require all granted
   </Directory>

   ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/ossn_error.log
   CustomLog /var/log/apache2/ossn_access.log combined

Save and close the file by pressing CTRL + X and then Y.

Step 9: Restart Apache and MariaDB

Reload Apache and MariaDB to apply the new changes by running the following commands:

sudo systemctl restart apache2
sudo systemctl restart mariadb

Step 10: Install OSSN

Open a web browser and navigate to http://YOUR-SERVER-IP/install. Follow the on-screen instructions to install OSSN.
