CUPS is a printing system used on many UNIX-like operating systems, including Void Linux. In this tutorial, we will be going through the steps required to install CUPS on Void Linux.
Before starting, make sure that you have the following packages installed:
sudo
git
gcc
make
You can install these packages using the following command:
sudo xbps-install -S sudo git gcc make
To install CUPS, we need to clone the CUPS GitHub repository and build it from source. Here are the steps to do that:
Open a terminal and clone the CUPS repository:
git clone https://github.com/apple/cups.git
Navigate to the cups
directory:
cd cups
Run the configure script:
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
This will configure the build process according to your system environment.
Build and install CUPS:
make
sudo make install
This will build and install CUPS on your system.
Enable and start the CUPS service:
sudo ln -s /etc/sv/cupsd /var/service/
This will make CUPS automatically start at boot time.
Now that CUPS is installed, we can configure it to work with printers. The CUPS web interface can be accessed by opening a web browser and navigating to:
http://localhost:631/
From here, we can add printers, manage jobs, and configure printing options.
In this tutorial, we have covered the steps required to install CUPS on Void Linux. With these steps, you should now have a fully functional printing system that can be managed via the CUPS web interface.
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
