BackupPC is a high-performance, disk-to-disk backup solution that uses a combination of rsync and Samba to backup files from multiple computers to a central server. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of installing BackupPC on Windows 10.
Before we proceed, make sure that your Windows 10 machine meets the following requirements:
Follow these steps to install BackupPC:
Download the latest version of BackupPC from https://backuppc.github.io/backuppc/
Extract the contents of the downloaded file to a directory of your choice. In our example, we have extracted the contents to C:\BackupPC
.
In File Explorer, navigate to the C:\BackupPC\bin
directory.
Right-click on BackupPC_Admin.exe
and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
The BackupPC web interface will now open in your default web browser. The initial login credentials are as follows:
You will now be prompted to change the password for the backuppc user. Choose a strong password and click on "Change Password".
You will now be redirected to the BackupPC home page. The next step is to configure BackupPC to backup your files.
Follow these steps to configure BackupPC:
In the BackupPC web interface, click on the "Edit Config" button in the top-right corner of the page.
In the configuration file, scroll down to the $Conf{SmbShareName}
section and enter the name of the Samba share that you want to backup.
Scroll down to the $Conf{RsyncShareName}
section and enter the name of the rsync module that you want to backup.
Scroll down to the $Conf{BackupFilesExclude}
section and enter any files or directories that you want to exclude from the backup.
Click on the "Save" button to save the changes.
Click on the "Hosts" tab in the BackupPC web interface.
Click on the "Add" button to add a new client to BackupPC.
Enter the hostname or IP address of the client that you want to backup, and choose the appropriate backup method (rsync or SMB).
Click on the "Save" button to save the settings.
Repeat steps 7-9 for all of the clients that you want to backup.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed and configured BackupPC on your Windows 10 machine. You can now schedule backups, monitor backup status, and restore files from the BackupPC web interface.
