How to Install DietPi on Windows 10

DietPi is a lightweight and efficient operating system that is based on Debian. It is designed for single-board computers and runs on ARM processors. However, it can also be installed on x86 machines, including your Windows PC.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you install DietPi on your Windows 10 machine:

Step 1: Download the DietPi image

  1. Go to the DietPi website at https://dietpi.com/.
  2. Click on the Downloads tab.
  3. Select the x86_64 architecture.
  4. Click on the Download button to download the DietPi image.

Step 2: Download and install VirtualBox

  1. Go to the VirtualBox website at https://www.virtualbox.org/.
  2. Click on the Download button.
  3. Select your operating system, which is Windows.
  4. Click on the Windows Hosts link to download the VirtualBox installer.
  5. Open the VirtualBox installer and follow the instructions to install VirtualBox on your computer.

Step 3: Create a new Virtual Machine

  1. Open VirtualBox.
  2. Click on the New button to create a new virtual machine.
  3. Enter "DietPi" as the name of the virtual machine.
  4. Select "Linux" as the type.
  5. Select "Debian (64-bit)" as the version.
  6. Click on the Next button.
  7. Set the RAM size the default is 512 MB and press next
  8. Select the second option and press Create a virtual hard disk now and click Create.
  9. Select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) and click on next.
  10. Choose Dynamically allocated and click on next.
  11. Set the size to at least 8Gb and click on create.

Step 4: Configure the Virtual Machine

  1. Select the "DietPi" virtual machine from the left-hand side of the VirtualBox window.
  2. Click on the Settings button.
  3. Click on the Storage tab.
  4. Click on the Empty disc icon under Controller: IDE.
  5. Click on the Choose Virtual Optical Disk File button.
  6. Locate the DietPi image that you downloaded in step 1 and select it.
  7. Click on the OK button to save the changes.

Step 5: Install DietPi

  1. Click on the Start button in the VirtualBox window to start the virtual machine.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DietPi. The process should be familiar to anyone who has installed an operating system before.
  3. When prompted, select the Basic Install option.
  4. Accept the defaults for all other settings.
  5. Wait for the installation to complete.

Once the installation is finished, you should be able to log into the DietPi desktop environment. You can use it just as you would any other operating system.
