How to Install OpenMediaVault on Windows 10

OpenMediaVault (OMV) is an open-source network-attached storage (NAS) software solution designed for home and small business users. OMV is based on Debian Linux and is capable of managing media files, backups, and other networked services.

In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps required to install OpenMediaVault on a Windows 10 computer.

Prerequisites

Step 1 - Download OpenMediaVault ISO

  1. Visit the official OpenMediaVault website at https://www.openmediavault.org.
  2. Click on the Download button on the homepage.
  3. Select the latest stable version of OpenMediaVault.
  4. Click on the appropriate architecture for your computer (64-bit recommended).
  5. Save the ISO file to your computer.

Step 2 - Install VirtualBox

  1. Visit the official VirtualBox website at https://www.virtualbox.org.
  2. Click on the Downloads link on the homepage.
  3. Select the latest version of VirtualBox for Windows hosts.
  4. Download the installer and run it.
  5. Follow the installation steps to complete the installation process.

Step 3 - Create a New Virtual Machine

  1. Open VirtualBox and click on the New button.
  2. Give your new virtual machine a name.
  3. Choose Linux as the operating system type.
  4. Choose Debian (64-bit) as the version.
  5. Allocate at least 2GB of RAM to the virtual machine.
  6. Choose the Create a virtual hard disk now option and click on Create.
  7. Choose VDI as the hard disk file type.
  8. Select the Dynamically allocated option and click on Next.
  9. Allocate at least 20GB of hard disk space and click on Create.

Step 4 - Configure the Virtual Machine

  1. Select the newly created virtual machine from the list.
  2. Click on the Settings button.
  3. Click on the Storage tab.
  4. Click on the Empty CD icon under the Controller: IDE section.
  5. Click on the Choose Virtual Optical Disk File button and select the OMV ISO file you downloaded earlier.
  6. Click on the OK button to save the changes.

Step 5 - Install OpenMediaVault

  1. Start the virtual machine by clicking on the Start button.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to install OpenMediaVault on the virtual machine.
  3. Once the installation is complete, click on the Shut Down button.

Step 6 - Start OpenMediaVault

  1. Select the virtual machine from the list in VirtualBox.
  2. Click on the Start button to start the virtual machine.
  3. Wait for OMV to boot up.
  4. Open your web browser and navigate to http://openmediavault.
  5. Log in using the default username admin and no password.
