UBOS is an open-source Linux distribution designed for hosting web applications. Installing UBOS on Windows 10 requires the use of a virtual machine, such as VirtualBox. This tutorial will guide you through the steps of downloading, installing, and running UBOS on Windows 10.
Prerequisites
Step 1: Install VirtualBox
VirtualBox is a virtualization software that allows you to run multiple operating systems on a single machine. To install VirtualBox on Windows 10, follow these steps:
- Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.
- Under VirtualBox platform packages, select Windows hosts.
- Click on the latest version to download the installer file.
- Once the installer file is downloaded, open it and follow the installation wizard.
Step 2: Create a new virtual machine
After installing VirtualBox, you need to create a new virtual machine for UBOS. To create a new virtual machine, follow these steps:
- Open VirtualBox.
- Click on New to create a new virtual machine.
- In the Name and Operating System screen, provide a name for your virtual machine (e.g. UBOS) and select Linux as the type.
- Choose the version of Linux that matches your UBOS image file (e.g. Ubuntu).
- Allocate the amount of memory and disk space for your virtual machine. It is recommended to allocate at least 2GB of memory and 20GB of disk space.
- Click on Create to create the new virtual machine.
Step 3: Install UBOS on VirtualBox
With the virtual machine created, you can now install UBOS on VirtualBox. To install UBOS on VirtualBox, follow these steps:
- Right-click on the new virtual machine you created and select Settings.
- In the Storage tab, click on Controller and select Add CD/DVD Device.
- Click on the Add button to select the UBOS image file you downloaded.
- Go back to the virtual machine and click on Start to boot the virtual machine.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install UBOS on the virtual machine.
Step 4: Access UBOS through the VirtualBox console
Once UBOS is installed on the virtual machine, you can access it through the VirtualBox console. To access UBOS through the VirtualBox console, follow these steps:
- In VirtualBox, select the virtual machine you want to access.
- Click on Start to start the virtual machine.
- Click on Show to launch the VirtualBox console.
- Enter your UBOS username and password to log in.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed UBOS on Windows 10 using VirtualBox. You can now use UBOS to host your web applications.
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
