Kiwix-Serve is an open-source program that allows users to host ZIM files, which are offline versions of websites, on a local server. In this tutorial, we will walk through the steps to install Kiwix-Serve on a Windows 10 operating system.
Before beginning, ensure that you have the following:
Open your preferred web browser and navigate to the kiwix-serve/">Kiwix-Serve download page.
Select the Windows version you want to download. You can either download a 32-bit or 64-bit package that is compatible with your system.
After downloading the package, extract it to another folder to begin the installation process. To do this, right-click on the downloaded ZIP file and select the "Extract All" option.
From the extracted folder, double-click on the file named kiwix-serve.exe
to launch the application.
If you are prompted to allow the app to make changes to your device, click "Yes" or "Allow."
A command prompt window will appear, displaying the Kiwix-Serve log-in instructions. To start the service, enter the following command:
kiwix-serve.exe --port=8000 path/to/content.zim --library --daemon
Replace path/to/content.zim
with the path to the ZIM file you would like to host, and set the --port
option to the desired port number.
Once you have entered the command, press "Enter" to start the Kiwix-Serve server.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed and launched Kiwix-Serve on your Windows 10 operating system. You can now access your hosted content by opening a web browser and navigating to http://localhost:port/
(replace port
with the port number you chose in step 6).
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
