How to Install Dar on Windows 11

This tutorial will guide you through the installation process of Dar on Windows 11.

Step 1: Install WSL 2

Dar requires a Linux environment to be installed. Therefore, the first step in installing Dar on Windows 11 is to install WSL 2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux). WSL 2 is a feature in Windows 11 that provides a Linux system running directly on Windows without the need for a virtual machine. Follow these steps to install WSL 2:

  1. Open the Start menu and search for "Turn Windows features on or off."
  2. Click on the option that appears and wait for the window to load.
  3. Scroll down to "Windows Subsystem for Linux" and check the box next to it.
  4. Click on "OK" and wait for the installation to complete.
  5. Once the installation is finished, restart your computer.

Step 2: Install a Linux distribution

With WSL 2 installed, the next step is to install a Linux distribution. Dar can be installed on any Debian-based Linux distribution. We recommend installing Ubuntu on WSL 2. To install Ubuntu on WSL 2, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Search for "Ubuntu" and select the first result.
  3. Click on "Get" and wait for the installation to complete.
  4. Once the installation is finished, launch the Ubuntu app.

Step 3: Install Dar

With a Linux distribution installed on WSL 2, the final step is to install Dar. To install Dar, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Terminal app in Ubuntu.
  2. Type the command sudo apt update and press Enter. This updates the package repository.
  3. Type the command sudo apt install dar and press Enter. This installs Dar on Ubuntu.
  4. Once the installation is finished, you can start using Dar.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Dar on Windows 11. You can now use the dar command in the Terminal to create and extract backups.
