Gogs is a self-hosted Git Service that is easy to use and lightweight. It is written in Go language and is open-source. It is designed to be easy to install and can be run on Windows 11 with a few simple steps. Here's how to install Gogs on Windows 11.
Extract the contents of the Gogs compressed file that you downloaded.
Navigate to the extracted folder and locate the file named gogs.exe
.
Right-click on the gogs.exe
file and select 'Run as administrator'. This will open a terminal window that will show the progress of the installation.
Once the terminal window displays HTTP Listen Address: http://localhost:3000
, open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000
. This will open the Gogs setup page.
On the setup page, enter the required information, such as the name of the administrator account, email address, and password.
Scroll down and enter your preferred database settings. Gogs supports two databases: SQLite3 and MySQL. If you choose MySQL, you will need to enter the MySQL database details.
Once you have configured all the required settings, click on the 'Install Gogs' button.
Gogs will be installed, and the terminal window will display 'Gogs has been installed successfully. Enjoy!'
Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000
again to access the Gogs login page.
Enter the administrator account credentials that you created during the setup process, and you will have access to your very own Git service.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed Gogs on Windows 11 and can now use it to manage your Git repositories.
If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!
Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
