How to Install Tine - Community Edition on Windows 11

Tine - Community Edition is an open-source web-based groupware system that allows individuals and organizations to manage their contacts, calendars, tasks, and email all in one place. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of installing Tine - Community Edition on your Windows 11 computer.

Prerequisites

Installation Steps

Step 1: Install XAMPP and configure PHP

Tine - Community Edition requires XAMPP, which is a free, open-source cross-platform web server package that includes Apache, MySQL, PHP, and other popular web development tools.

To install XAMPP, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the XAMPP download page and download the latest version of XAMPP for Windows 11.
  2. Double-click on the downloaded file to begin the installation process.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to install XAMPP to the default location (C:\xampp).
  4. Launch XAMPP's Control Panel by searching for 'XAMPP Control Panel' in the Start menu.
  5. Start the 'Apache' and 'MySQL' modules by clicking on the 'Start' button next to each module.

Now that XAMPP is up and running, we need to configure PHP to meet Tine - Community Edition's requirements.

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the XAMPP installation directory (C:\xampp by default).
  2. Open the 'php' folder, then locate and open the 'php.ini' file in a text editor, such as Notepad.
  3. Find the line that reads "memory_limit = 128M" and change it to "memory_limit = 512M".
  4. Find the line that reads "post_max_size = 8M" and change it to "post_max_size = 50M".
  5. Find the line that reads "upload_max_filesize = 2M" and change it to "upload_max_filesize = 50M".
  6. Save and exit the 'php.ini' file.

Step 2: Install Tine - Community Edition

Now that XAMPP and PHP are configured, we can proceed with the installation of Tine - Community Edition.

  1. Open your web browser and go to the Tine - Community Edition GitHub page.
  2. Click on the green 'Code' button and select 'Download ZIP' to download a copy of the Tine - Community Edition source code.
  3. Extract the downloaded ZIP file to a location of your choice (e.g. C:\Tine-Community).
  4. Launch the XAMPP Control Panel and start the 'Apache' and 'MySQL' modules if they are not already running.
  5. Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/.
  6. Click on the 'New' button in the left-hand sidebar to create a new database.
  7. Enter a name for the database (e.g. 'tine20') and click on the 'Create' button.
  8. In File Explorer, navigate to the location where you extracted the Tine - Community Edition source code and open the 'setup' folder.
  9. Locate and open the 'config.inc.php' file in a text editor.
  10. Find the line that reads "$c->database->params->username='root';" and change 'root' to your XAMPP MySQL username (usually 'root').
  11. Find the line that reads "$c->database->params->password='';" and change '' to your XAMPP MySQL password (usually blank).
  12. Find the line that reads "$c->database->params->dbname='tine20';" and change 'tine20' to the name of the database you created in Step 7.
  13. Save and exit the 'config.inc.php' file.
  14. Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost/path/to/tine20/index.php (replace 'path/to/tine20' with the actual path to where you extracted the Tine - Community Edition source code).
  15. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue with the installation of Tine - Community Edition.
  16. Once the installation is complete, you can log in to Tine - Community Edition by navigating to http://localhost/path/to/tine20/index.php (again, replacing 'path/to/tine20' with the actual path to the source code) and entering the admin username and password that you specified during the installation.
