Webtrees is a free and open-source genealogy software that helps you to manage your family tree online. In this tutorial, we will guide you on how to install webtrees on your Windows 11 machine so that you can start building your family tree.
Before we start with the installation process, ensure that you have the following requirements:
The first step is to download the webtrees installation package from the official website. Here are the steps:
Visit the webtrees website https://www.webtrees.net/ and click on the "Download" button at the top of the page.
Select the latest version and then choose the download appropriate file for Windows.
Wait for the download to complete then proceed to the installation process.
Webtrees requires a web server software to run. In this tutorial, we will use XAMPP as our web server software.
Download XAMPP from the Apache Friends website https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html.
Install XAMPP on your Windows 11 machine. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
Once the installation is complete, launch the XAMPP control panel and start the Apache and MySQL modules.
Webtrees requires a MySQL database to store its data. In this step, we will create a new MySQL database for webtrees on XAMPP.
Open your web browser and enter the following address: http://localhost/phpmyadmin/.
Click on the "New" button to create a new database.
Name your database "webtrees" and leave the other options as default.
Click on the "Create" button to create the database.
Go to the "Privileges" tab and add a new user. Select "localhost" as the host and name your user "root".
Set a password for your user and select "Grant all privileges".
Extract the webtrees installation package to the htdocs directory in your XAMPP installation directory (usually C:\xampp\htdocs).
Rename the extracted folder to "webtrees".
Open your web browser and enter the following address: http://localhost/webtrees/.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. When prompted, enter the database details that you have created in step 3.
Once the installation is complete, you can access your webtrees instance by going to your web browser and entering: http://localhost/webtrees/.
