How to install GNU Emacs on macOS

GNU Emacs is a powerful and extensible text editor, available for various operating systems. Here are the steps to install it on macOS:

  1. Download Emacs for macOS from the official website: http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/. Click on the "Download Emacs" button to get the latest version.

  2. Open the downloaded file. You should see a disk image called "Emacs-x.x.x-x-universal.dmg" (where x.x.x is the version number). Double-click on it to open it.

  3. In the opened window, drag the Emacs icon to the Applications folder. This will install Emacs on your system.

  4. Now that Emacs is installed, you can launch it from the Applications folder or from Spotlight search. Double-click on the Emacs icon to launch it.

  5. When Emacs starts up, you will see the "Welcome to GNU Emacs" screen. You can read it or skip it. To skip it, just press the Return key.

  6. Congratulations! You have successfully installed GNU Emacs on your macOS system.
