How to Install OpenMediaVault on macOS

OpenMediaVault is a free, open-source network-attached storage (NAS) solution that allows you to share and manage files, stream media, and perform data backups. It is available for multiple platforms, including macOS.

In this tutorial, I will guide you on how to install OpenMediaVault on macOS using VirtualBox.

Prerequisites

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

Steps

  1. Open VirtualBox and click on "New" to create a new virtual machine.

  2. Choose a name for your virtual machine and select "Linux" as the type of operating system. Choose "Debian 64-bit" as the version.

  3. Allocate memory to your virtual machine. This will depend on your system resources, but at least 2GB of RAM is recommended.

  4. On the Hard Disk section, choose "Create a virtual hard disk now" and select the VHD type.

  5. Choose "Dynamically allocated" for the storage on the virtual hard disk. Allocate enough storage depending on your needs.

  6. Click on "Create" to create your virtual machine.

  7. Once your virtual machine is created, click on "Settings" and navigate to the "Storage" tab.

  8. Click on the "+" button to add an optical drive. Choose "Choose Virtual Optical Disk File" and select the OpenMediaVault ISO file you downloaded earlier.

  9. Click on "Ok" and then "Start" to start your virtual machine.

  10. Follow the on-screen instructions to install OpenMediaVault on your virtual machine.

  11. Once the installation is complete, restart your virtual machine.

  12. In your web browser, navigate to http://192.168.56.101/ (replace the IP address with the IP address of your virtual machine if it is different).

  13. Enter the default username and password which is "admin" for both.

  14. You can now configure OpenMediaVault from the web interface.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed OpenMediaVault on your macOS computer using VirtualBox. You can now use your OpenMediaVault NAS to share files, stream media, and perform data backups.

If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!

Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
