Outline is a free and open-source tool for creating your own virtual private network (VPN) server. With Outline, you can set up a secure connection to the internet, protect your online privacy and access blocked content from anywhere in the world. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to install the Outline Server on your macOS computer.
Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure you have the following:
- A macOS computer running version 10.12 (Sierra) or later
- Administrative access to your computer
- A stable internet connection
Step 1: Download Outline
First, you need to download the Outline Server application from the official website. Here's how to do it:
- Go to the Outline website and click the "Download" button.
- Choose the version for your operating system, macOS in this case.
- Save the file to your computer.
Step 2: Install Outline Server
Now that you have the Outline Server installer, it's time to install it on your computer. Follow these steps:
- Open the folder where you saved the downloaded file (usually the "Downloads" folder).
- Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process.
- In the welcome screen, click the "Continue" button.
- Read the terms and conditions carefully and click the "Agree" button.
- Choose the destination for the installation (the default folder is fine) and click the "Continue" button.
- Click the "Install" button and enter your administrator password when prompted.
- Wait for the installation to complete.
Step 3: Set up Outline Server
After you've installed Outline Server, follow these steps to set it up:
- Find the Outline Server icon in your Applications folder and double-click to launch it.
- In the welcome screen, click the "Get Started" button.
- Choose "Create New Access Key" and click the "Continue" button.
- Choose a name for your server (e.g. "MyOutlineServer") and click the "Continue" button.
- Choose a password and click the "Continue" button.
- Choose the location where you want your server to be hosted (you can choose "Custom" if you prefer).
- Wait for the installation to complete.
Step 4: Connect to Outline Server
Now that you've installed and set up Outline Server, here's how to connect to it:
- On your computer, click the Wi-Fi icon in the top right corner of the screen and click "Open Network Preferences".
- Click the "+" button at the bottom of the list of networks.
- Choose "VPN" as the interface and "IKEv2" as the VPN type.
- Enter the name you chose for your server in the "Server Address" field.
- Enter the access key you created in the "Remote ID" and "Local ID" fields.
- Enter the password you created in the "Authentication Settings" section.
- Click the "Apply" button to save your settings.
