Podman is a container engine which allows you to run OCI containers without the need of a container daemon. This tutorial will guide you through the installation process of Podman on macOS.

Pre-Requisites

Before we get started, make sure you meet the following prerequisites:

  1. macOS version 10.14 or later

  2. Homebrew package manager installed. If you don't have it, run the following command in terminal:

    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"

Installation

To install Podman on macOS, follow the steps below:

  1. Add the Podman tap to Homebrew by running the following command in terminal:

    brew tap containers/podman

  2. Install Podman by running the following command in terminal:

    brew install podman

  3. Once the installation is complete, verify that Podman is installed by running the following command in terminal:

    podman version

This should output the current version of Podman installed.

  4. If you encounter any errors during the installation or running of Podman, you may need to update your Xcode command line tools. To check if you have them installed, run the following command in terminal:

    xcode-select -p

If this returns a directory path, then the Xcode command line tools are installed. If it returns an error or an empty response, run the following command to install them:

    xcode-select --install

If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!

Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
