Ejabberd is a popular, open-source instant messaging (IM) server that supports real-time communication, online presence detection, and messaging functionalities. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Ejabberd on macOS.
Before you start the installation process, make sure you have the following:
Homebrew is a package manager that allows you to install packages easily on macOS. To install Homebrew, open the terminal and run the following command:
/usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
Ejabberd is written in Erlang programming language, so you will need to install it to run Ejabberd. To install the latest version of Erlang, use the following command:
brew install erlang
Once Erlang is installed, you can verify the installation by running the following command:
erl
If Erlang is installed correctly, you will see the Erlang shell prompt. Exit the shell by typing Ctrl+c
twice.
You can install Ejabberd using Homebrew with the following command:
brew install ejabberd
Once the installation process is completed, take note of the location of the Ejabberd configuration file which is /usr/local/etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.yml
.
To start the Ejabberd server, use the following command:
sudo ejabberdctl start
You may need to enter your administrator password to run this command. Once the server is running, you can verify its status by running the following command:
ejabberdctl status
If the server is running, you should see a message that says "The node ejabberd@localhost is started with status: started".
To configure Ejabberd, you will need to edit the configuration file located at /usr/local/etc/ejabberd/ejabberd.yml
. For example, you may want to change the domain name, enable or disable modules, or change authentication settings.
After making any changes to the configuration file, you will need to restart the Ejabberd server for the changes to take effect using the following command:
sudo ejabberdctl restart
