How to Install webtrees on macOS

Webtrees is a free and open-source genealogy software that allows users to manage their family tree online. In this tutorial, we are going to explain how to install webtrees on macOS.

Prerequisites

Before we start, make sure your Mac has the following:

Step 1: Download webtrees

Open your preferred web browser and navigate to the webtrees download page.

Click on the download button for macOS (Mac OS X 10.4 or higher), and the webtrees archive file will begin downloading immediately.

Step 2: Extract the downloaded file

Once the download is finished, navigate to the location where the webtrees archive file has been saved. Right-click on the file and choose "Extract Here" to uncompress its contents.

Step 3: Move the extracted files to XAMPP

Go to the directory where XAMPP is installed. Usually, it is located at

/Applications/XAMPP/htdocs

Copy the extracted webtrees files and paste them into the htdocs folder.

Step 4: Run the webtrees installer

Start your web server by navigating to the XAMPP control panel and clicking on the "Start" button next to Apache.

Then open your web browser and go to http://localhost/webtrees.

The webtrees installer will open, and it will guide you through the installation process. Simply follow the instructions and fill in the required information, such as the database name, username, and password.

Once you have completed the installation process, you should be able to access your new family tree by going to http://localhost/webtrees.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed webtrees on your Mac computer!

If you want to self-host in an easy, hands free way, need an external IP address, or simply want your data in your own hands, give IPv6.rs a try!

Alternatively, for the best virtual desktop, try Shells!
